The Shadow and the Mirror: Understanding Projection vs Reflection
By Jonathan Carroll
One of the most powerful mirrors in our human experience is the difference between **projection** and **reflection**. Both show us something about ourselves, but projection is trickier because it usually hides in the shadows.
**Projection** happens when we unconsciously push something we do not want to face in ourselves onto someone else.
**Reflection** is when life mirrors back to us a quality, light or shadow, that is already present and ready to be seen.
How Projection Shows Up
Projection is subtle. It can wear different disguises:
Wanting credibility
You might see another coach or leader and think, "They are always self-promoting. Who do they think they are?" Yet underneath, what you truly crave is to own your own authority and stand unapologetically in your message.
Feeling not enough
You may accuse others of being "fake" or "trying too hard." Often that comes from an inner fear that you yourself are not enough as you are.
Admiration
Even positive projection is real. If you admire someone's courage, brilliance, or creativity, that is your soul pointing to a quality you already have but may not yet be fully expressing.
Needing support
Sometimes we call others "too needy" when, truthfully, we are the ones longing for support but have not given ourselves permission to ask for it.
Business Examples
A leader blames their team for being "disorganized," when in reality they are resisting creating systems themselves.
A business owner says, "No one can afford my services," when really it is their own belief about worth and money being projected outward.
Someone criticizes others for "chasing clients," but underneath they are afraid of putting their work into the world and being rejected.
Other Examples
Calling someone "arrogant"
May mask your own discomfort with being visible in your power.
Judging others for being "too emotional"
Might signal the emotions within you that you have been holding back.
Feeling "triggered" by someone else's joy
Could reveal the part of you that has shut down your own ability to feel pleasure.
A Note for Coaches
Projection is not a flaw. It is human. However, as coaches and leaders, we must be extra mindful. It is easy to unconsciously lay our own projections onto clients or team members and mistake it for sound feedback. That can create confusion or even harm, because instead of witnessing them clearly, we are filtering their truth through our own unprocessed lens.
The higher responsibility is to do our own inner work, to notice when something is "ours" versus truly arising from the other person. When we hold that awareness, we become clearer mirrors, and the feedback we offer comes from presence, not projection.
Working Through Projection
The beautiful part is that projection is not a flaw. It is an invitation. Here are some ways to transmute it:
01
Pause and Notice
When someone's behaviour feels exaggerated in your perception, stop and ask: "Why does this bother me so much?"
02
Ask the Mirror Question
"Where is this alive in me?" or "What part of myself am I not acknowledging?"
03
Reclaim the Gift
If you admire someone, see it as a signpost: "This is in me too."
04
Own Your Language
Shift from "They made me feel…" to "I felt…". This keeps responsibility with you.
05
Integrate with Compassion
Instead of shaming yourself for projecting, bring love to that hidden part. It only wants to be seen and integrated.
The Deeper Truth
Projection distorts. Reflection reveals. Both are teachers.
When you notice yourself triggered by others, whether through judgment, jealousy, or even admiration, you have just been handed a sacred clue.
The world is not happening to you. It is happening for you. Every projection and reflection is another invitation to remember who you really are.
